Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 19, 2026. Covers the Playtime app (iOS and Android), musicutil.com, and Maestro Academy (academy.musicutil.com). The short version: your music stays on your device; our servers hold only what accounts and classrooms need; we never sell data or show ads.

Data that stays on your device

Almost everything you create in Playtime is stored locally on your device and is never uploaded to us:

  • Audio you record or import, and anything derived from it (waveforms, transcripts, bookmarks, loops, detected tempo/key)
  • Songs, chord charts, lyric sheets, setlists and sheet-music photos/scans
  • Practice statistics, game scores and skill progress
  • App settings and preferences

Deleting the app deletes this data. We have no copy.

Maestro account data (our servers)

If you create a Maestro account to use the AI features, our servers (hosted on Microsoft Azure in the United States) store:

  • Your email address and a salted hash of your password (never the password itself), used to sign you in
  • Your chat conversations with Maestro, so conversations can continue across sessions
  • Usage records (request counts, token counts, estimated cost, timestamps), used to enforce plan limits and prevent abuse
  • Moderation and abuse-prevention records when requests trip our safety rules

To generate responses, the content of your Maestro messages (and the app context they include, such as your instrument and skill level) is processed by Anthropic as our AI provider, under their commercial API terms. Anthropic does not train models on this API data.

We do not sell your data, show ads, or use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.

Your own API key (optional)

Some features let you paste your own Anthropic API key. That key is stored in your device's secure storage (Keychain/Keystore), sent only to Anthropic to make your requests, and never sent to our servers.

Device permissions

Microphone — recording practice audio and the tuner's pitch detection. Audio is processed on-device.

Camera / photo library — photographing sheet music and printed lyric sheets. If AI recognition is used on a photo, the image is processed by the AI provider and is not retained by us.

Each permission is requested only when you first use the feature and can be revoked in system settings.

Third-party content you request

When you ask the app to fetch chords, lyrics or scores from public websites, or to import audio from a URL, the app contacts those sites directly from your device with your search terms. Those sites see the request as coming from you and their own privacy policies apply.

Subscriptions

Paid subscriptions are billed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We receive subscription status, never your payment details.

Data retention and deletion

Local data: under your control; delete items in the app or delete the app.

Maestro account: delete it any time in the app (Account → Maestro account → Delete account) or by emailing us. Deletion permanently removes your account, chat history, and usage data from our servers. Anonymous abuse-prevention records that no longer identify you may be retained.

Maestro Academy (academy.musicutil.com)

The Academy is our web classroom companion. Its servers (Microsoft Azure, United States) store:

  • Teacher accounts — email address, salted password hash, school-email verification status, and an optional self-declared veteran flag.
  • Student class accounts — a display name or nickname, a username and PIN, class membership, and an avatar choice. Student class accounts never require an email address or any contact information.
  • Learning records — game results, quiz attempts and grades, lesson and module progress, practice statistics, XP and streaks.
  • Classroom content — classes, assignments, quizzes, lessons and curricula that teachers create, and messages between teachers and their students (optionally delivered by email to teachers).
  • AI feedback and TA — practice summaries sent to our AI provider to write coaching feedback, and TA (teaching-assistant) conversations, which run on the connected Playtime account exactly as described for Maestro above.

Public Live Games can be played without any account: guests pick a nickname and avatar that live only for the game session and are not stored after the room closes.

Cookies

We use only functional cookies: sign-in session and security (anti-forgery) cookies, and a small preference that remembers if you snoozed the donation banner. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and no third-party analytics.

Children's privacy (COPPA)

The Playtime app and Maestro accounts are designed for teens and up and are not directed at children under 13; we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 there, and will delete any such account on request.

Maestro Academy is used by students of all school ages through their school: accounts are created under a teacher's class using a class code, with no student email, phone number or contact details collected. We rely on the school/teacher to obtain any consent required for their students, we use student data only to provide the educational service to that classroom, and we never use it for advertising or profiling. Teachers and schools can review or delete their students' records at any time (or ask us to).

School data (FERPA-aligned)

For classroom use, we act as a service provider to the school: student education records in the Academy belong to the school and its teachers. We use them only to operate the Academy, don't disclose them to third parties except as needed to provide the service (hosting on Azure; AI feedback as described above), and delete them at the school's request.

Your rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time (see how to delete your account or email us). Depending on where you live (e.g. California, the EU/UK), you may have additional statutory rights — we honor access/deletion requests regardless of residence. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the app and this page will show the updated version and effective date.
